Supporting National Grid
The best route from A to B is sometimes via sea
When a National Grid transformer in Wiltshire suffered a critical failure, it had to be replaced as quickly as possible – but the route from A to B was not straightforward.
A strategic spare transformer was on hand at the National Grid’s spares’ centre in Bedfordshire. This presented various challenges: complex highways’ routing, weak bridges, and other structures en route that would be problematic. Our multi-disciplined team’s experience came to the fore.
- Our solution was to take the unit from Bedforshire straight to Tilbury Docks – making use of a maintained heavy load route we know well.
- Our experienced project managers know the UK road systems, and we have the direct relationships to secure special order permits quickly.
- From Tilbury Docks, we shipped the new transformer to Avonmouth – the nearest seaport to the substation.
Finally – recommending an approach to reduce the impact on local road infrastructure – we moved the transformer from the port to the substation, over a period of two weekends. Usually, a project like this would take six months or more to plan – but we completed this project in just six weeks…
