Logistics for Hinkley Point C

Map-pin

The right logistics for the UK’s new nuclear power stations

As we celebrate our 25th birthday, we’re looking back at some of our proudest moments in specialist logistics. One of those involves Hinkley Point C – the first in a new generation of UK nuclear power stations. We transported two enormous tunnel borers from Germany to the UK – combining an ocean voyage with an innovative, inland waterway solution.

This is the Osprey Way of Working.

Raising the bar for standards, prioritising quality and safety throughout, our detailed route analysis helped us to shape the right transport solution by taking advantage of every inch available, both on land and on water.

  • Capturing everything we learned so that we can share those insights with project stakeholders
  • Collaborating with multiple stakeholders, keeping the local community informed too
  • And in this case, providing a multi-modal solution – a flat top barge, floating RoRo by SPMT, and door to door AIL

We pooled our teams’ experience (and equipment) to manage the transhipment, effectively helping Hinkley to reduce site-based fabrication (the tunnel borers were built overseas in a controlled, factory environment). The marine delivery also helped to minimise disruption for the local community.

Safely completing this delivery for Hinkley Point C set the standard for future delivery of critical nuclear assets. Our ‘open learning’ approach means the insights we gained from start to finish could be shared across the whole project. What’s more, that knowledge can be passed onto future contract partners, thereby reducing the cycles of re-learning to improve safety and productivity. It’s how we approach all of our specialist logistics projects – working better, together.

Delivering

“Working with Osprey, and Balfour Beatty, we’ve accrued logistics knowledge and expertise that will be essential for future works at Hinkley Point C…”
