Case Study
Supporting UK Ship Building
Innovative solutions for everyday challenges
Our client – the Wight Shipyard Company – needed to move new Twin City Liner catamarans, from a fabrication shed, into the River Medina on the Isle of Wight. These vessels weigh in at up to 112te.
We have the ideal equipment for projects like this: some of the UK’s most capable heavy-lift cranes, the right haulage partners, the rigging and the crews. But the Isle of Wight ferry’s GVW restrictions exclude our LTM1800 and LG1550 cranes. We are, however, prepared for this kind of challenge.
- For the first catamaran – a 112te Red Jet 7 – we stripped both cranes; allocated extra support vehicles; shipped the cranes, their kit, our teams and our SPMTs over to the Isle of Wight – rebuilt everthing and then did a tandem lift, moving the vessel into the water.
- For the second catamaran – weighing in at 72te – we also suggested a tandem lift solution. But with slightly different lift-location potins in the catamaran’s design, this wasn’t an option. So, working with the lifting beam manufacturer, we engineered a bespoke arrangement that let the lift be carried out by a single crane.
In both instances, our flexible approach saved both time and money.
